How could your children help to meet some of the most fundamental needs of some of the poorest people in the world? This week on the Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith is talking with Water Wells for Africa founder Kurt Dahlin about his family’s experience.

Mike Smith:
Kurt, last time, you told us a little bit about how you came to be concerned about the water situation in Africa. How have your children participated in this effort? Tell us about their involvement, and how that has impacted their lives.

Kurt Dahlin:
As I mentioned before, Mike, I’ve been going to Africa each summer for 20 years. So at first, my little kids participated simply by weeping when I left. Eventually, all five of my girls have grown up to serve in Africa, and my youngest son, Daniel, will go this summer for the first time. I wait until they’re about 17 years old, then they join the team, and eventually emerge as team leaders.

Kristina, my number two girl, was impacted by the need for hygiene and health, and she went back to school, after graduating from Biola University, to get the necessary medical background to get into a graduate school program for physician’s assistant.

Danika, my number three girl, has been to Africa so many times that she married the son of a Wycliffe translator. My kids have been involved in planning, teaching, and serving the poorest of the poor. They all use their diverse talents to promote the gospel. We live in a special time, Mike, when ordinary people can do extraordinary things, and we need to reach back and empower that generation—the next generation of leaders.

Mike:
Kurt, that’s terrific advice. Thank you for sharing that with our listeners! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
