Where did your water come from today? Fresh water is something most of us never even think about. It’s just there when you turn on the tap! One homeschooling father shares how water became a mission for him—today on Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
This week, my guest is Kurt Dahlin, founder and president of Water Wells for Africa. Kurt’s also a homeschooling veteran from the early days of the homeschool movement in California, and a good friend of mine. Kurt, welcome to the program!

Kurt Dahlin:
Mike, I’m so glad to speak with you.

Mike:
Kurt, can you tell us a little bit about how Water Wells for Africa got started? How did you go from being a homeschool dad to founding a humanitarian organization?

Kurt:
Mike, I’m still a homeschool dad! It began in 1991; I started taking short term missions teams to South Africa. It’s easy to fall in love with the people, the music, the culture. It’s also easy to see that they struggle everyday just for the most basic necessities of life.

In 1994, I had an opportunity to go a couple of countries north to Malawi. It’s one of the poorest countries in the world. I saw women walking with huge buckets of water on their head. There was no visible water source, no village in sight, and I wondered how long they’d been walking, how much further they needed to walk lugging that heavy bucket. So I felt like I should do something to give them access to clean water.

Mike:
Well, thank you, Kurt! I look forward to hearing more about your family’s involvement in Water Wells for Africa. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
