These days, it’s harder than ever to be a dad. Life is busy, but society downplays the crucial role of fathers. But take heart—this week on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Smith visits with a guest who's on a mission to help fathers be more engaged at home.

Mike Smith:
This week, my guest is Derek Carter, homeschooling dad and president of Foundations for Family Success. Derek, welcome to the program!

Derek Carter:
Hi, Mike. How are you? Thank you.

Mike:
Derek, we’ve all heard about how essential it is for fathers to be involved in the lives of their children. But is this really an issue for homeschool dads, as well?

Derek:
Yeah, I think this is an issue, Mike, for all dads, including homeschool dads. Sometimes our work schedules are just such that it really does, can and without realizing it interfere with our ability to really spend time with our family, particularly our children. Often times without realizing it we kind of push our children to the peripheral and not really realizing that we're missing out on their growth and what’s going on in their lives.

So I think with homeschool dads in particular I think that we have opportunities and we have some advantages that I think we don’t realize that better help us to make sure that doesn’t really happen.

Mike:

Well that’s very helpful, Derek. Thank you for that. I’m looking forward to hearing your encouragement the rest of the week on how we can be more godly and involved as fathers! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
