Do you ever stare at your budget, hoping if you look long enough, you’ll find some expense that could just…disappear? Lisa Baughn suggests ways to economize you that may not have considered, today on Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
Lisa, we’ve talked about the grocery and curriculum budget already this week—what are some ways that homeschooling families could save money that they might not have thought about?

Lisa Baughn:
Living a prudent life is an exciting way to live if you choose to look at it that way. There’s so many ways to transform a small budget into a rich, full life. “Simplify” is the first thing. Continuously ask the Lord to help you find new ways to do things. Just because we’re doing it this way doesn’t mean it’s the best way.

Read everything you can on budgeting, getting out of debt, cooking, running a home, running a business, or whatever you can do to either add money to your home or save money. Learn and implement one new idea or recipe each week. Instead of making reservations, learn to make your own favorite restaurant meals at home. We cover this a lot on our website, www.theprudentwife.com.

Eat for health. Spend a little more money upfront for nutritious whole foods today, but reap the benefits in improved health and in preventing disease later. Learn to grow in gardens and learn to can and freeze produce for the winter, or just befriend a gardener and take their leftovers—bartering is huge. Wrap a blanket around your water heater. Insulate and save big year round. Ask for deals, you’ll be amazed at what the Lord will provide.

Mike:
Lisa, those are great ideas! Next time, we’ll highlight the importance of planning. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
