Do you remember when homeschooling was little-known and often misunderstood? Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith and Mike Farris look at a few ways that homeschoolers have been earning recognition for this excellent education option.

Mike Smith:
Mike, this week, we’ve been talking about a lot of legal issues and events that relate to homeschooling. But homeschooling has made strides in other areas of society, too! Would you tell our listeners about some of them, please?

Mike Farris:
Well, we’re really proud of our friends, Eric and Joyce Burges, who founded the National Black Home Education Resources Association, focusing on African American homeschoolers—that was in July of 2000.

Then, we’ve seen a continuing trend of homeschoolers being validated from external sources by winning spelling bees, geography bees, pretty much any bee that’s out there, they tend to win.

Tim Tebow won the biggest bee of all in sports, the Heisman Trophy—a homeschooled kid. We’ve seen homeschoolers enter into other major league sports: Matthew Betsill was drafted by the Twins, and Joey Logano is in NASCAR.

Mike, I also should say that the Homeschool Widow’s Fund (that the Home School Foundation has done in the last 10 years) has been a real blessing. More encouragement and joy comes from finding out those stories than about anything I am aware of in the last 10 years.

Mike Smith:
Thanks, Mike! It’s so encouraging to see how homeschoolers are continuing to excel in many areas of life! What a testimony to the fact that homeschooling is a tremendous choice for education! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
