Do your children treat each other like friends—or just siblings? Is “best friends forever” something they can attain? Yes, say the authors of Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends! Learn why on today’s Home School Heartbeat with host Mike Smith and Sarah Mally.

Mike Smith:
Today I’m joined by Sarah Mally, who’s an author and speaker as well as the founder of Bright Lights, a nationwide discipleship ministry for girls. Sarah, thanks so much for joining us today!

Sarah Mally:
Thank you! It’s great to be here!

Mike:
Homeschooling families often work hard to cultivate positive relationships between children. But Sarah, you and your siblings have worked to take that to the next level—real friendship. How did that start in your family?

Sarah:
I remember when I was younger, thinking about my relationship with Stephen and Grace and wondering, “Is there anything I can do to strengthen our relationship and get even closer?” And the Lord gave me a little idea that worked really well. And that was to start a one-on-one group with Stephen and with Grace. And I decided to call it ATTACH, which stands for Advancing Together Towards Accountability, Christ-likeness, and Harmony.

So every so often we’d go out for breakfast or go on a picnic and have an ATTACH meeting, where we read the Bible together, share prayer requests, work on projects together. And I thought I was starting ATTACH just to encourage Stephen and Grace, but I had no idea how much the Lord would use it to encourage me! And you know, if we’re missing out on a close friendship with our siblings, we are missing out on one of the very biggest blessings God has for us.

Mike:
Thank you, Sarah! That’s a terrific perspective. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
