“Ok, that’s a great idea—but where do I start?” Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA president Mike Smith talks with Wanda Gibert of Heritage House Press about exactly how you can begin integrating the study of African-American history into your homeschool curriculum.

Mike Smith:
In our previous programs, Wanda, I think you’ve made a good case for the value of studying how God has used African-Americans in our country’s history. But how do we go about this practically?

Wanda Gibert:
First, you have to make a decision to be proactive in incorporating African-American history. Our history is rich with stories of brave African-American patriots that we just don’t know about—and their close connection with our founding fathers.

I recommend Ken Ham’s book One Blood, because it’s key to act as agents of healing from studying some of their horrific events that took place. Also, I recommend Wall Builders, and PBS’s series, “Africans in America,” which can be found at your local library.

Personally, I like to use lots of living books and original or primary source documents. In Telling the Whole Story, I’ve included book lists and some primary documents for easy reference.

I also like to give my children the opportunity to reenact so they can tell the story over and over again. This is a great way that they can take ownership of what they have learned. You can also visit our website, heritagehousepress.net and sign up for our free newsletter and other resources.

Mike:
Wanda, that’s really a helpful list. And I’m sure our listeners will put it to good use. Thank you so much for being with us this week, and may God bless your work. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
