An Unexpected Visit

A Home School Legal Defense Association member family was surprised to find Sedgwick Public Schools Principal Mike Couch at the door. He threatened to report them to social services for truancy. Then, he gave them information about the local public school system in case they decided to change their mind and send their child back to public school. HSLDA warned Mr. Couch not to return to the home without a proper invitation and appointment.

Another Sedgwick family received a letter from Mr. Couch, who wrote:

Though you may be home schooling your student, USD 439 is required to report your child as truant to the county (district) attorney. You have five school days to respond to this notice. Failure of attendance at school by your child or an unacceptable response by you to this notice shall result in a report being filed with the county (district) attorney.

In response, HSLDA has notified Mr. Couch that these children are properly enrolled in a private school registered with the state. The private school just happens to be located in the home of the student. – Scott A. Woodruff
