Unauthorized Questionnaire

Tom Osborne, of the Regional Office of Education for Bureau, Henry and Stark counties, recently demanded that a Keweanee family fill out and swear to a 12-point questionnaire. It asked how many hours per week the children would be taught, the books that would be used, the educational level of the parents, and other questions. Mr. Osborne said that the decision to home school “is a difficult one,” and that the sworn questionnaire was necessary to “insure that those who profess they are home schooling their child/children are indeed doing so . . . .”

Home School Legal Defense Association explained to Mr. Osborne that he has no legal authority to make such a demand, and advised that this member family will not return the unauthorized questionnaire. – Scott A. Woodruff
