Midland Tries to Require Form

Several days after a Midland Home School Legal Defense Association member met with a speech therapist to arrange therapy for their special needs child, the family received a letter from the attendance officer of the Bay-Arenac ISD. The letter advised the parents that they must fill out and return a Home School Report Form, which claimed, “This form is to be completed by all parents who are educating their children at home and who wish to be exempted from the compulsory school attendance provision . . . under . . . §1561(3)(f).” But, as HSLDA promptly informed the attendance officer, parents who choose to operate under Michigan Code § 1561(3)(f) are under no obligation to fill out any such form. The attendance officer has since dropped the matter.
