Annual Progress Report Deadlines
Home School Legal Defense Association continues to be contacted by member families who received letters from public school officials advising them that their annual progress reports were due on the last school day of May, specifically May 28, 1999. In each case, HSLDA has responded to the public school officials—advising them that state law does not require the submission of the annual report on the date designated by the public school officials.
While the administrative rules governing home schools in Hawaii require that parents submit to the principal an annual report of a child’s progress, there is no date specified in the rules for the submission of the annual report. Parents are free to establish the commencement date and ending date of each school year independent of the school year established for public schools. School officials receiving correspondence from HSLDA on this issue have made no further attempts to enforce the unauthorized deadline.
