Fair College Entrance Requirements
Senate Bill 519, introduced by Senator Nancy Rodriguez, addresses college and university discrimination against home schoolers. This bill’s purpose is to clarify a bill passed last year that attempted to accomplish the same thing. S.B. 519 provides that standard requirements for admission to any public post-secondary educational institution (including community colleges) shall not require a student who has completed the requirements of a home-based or non-public school educational program and who has submitted test scores that otherwise qualify him for admission to that institution, to obtain a GED certificate. This will satisfy colleges and universities which have required a high school diploma for admission and subject community colleges to the same standards as colleges and universities.
This bill goes on to state that, in determining requirements for admission, a college’s board of regents shall evaluate and treat applicants from home-based or non-public-education programs fairly and in a nondiscriminatory manner.
Home School Legal Defense Association strongly supports S.B. 519 and applauds Nancy Rodriguez for her desire to bring fairness to college entrance requirements for home schoolers in the state of New Mexico.
On March 8, HSLDA sent out an alert to our New Mexico members, urging them to contact their senators and representatives with a request to support S.B. 519. By the time this newsletter reaches member mailboxes, we trust home schoolers’ efforts will have resulted in the passage of this bill.
