New Hampshire
Home-Based “Private School” Recognized
New Hampshire home schoolers can qualify as a private school, if they are willing to put up with the bureaucratic hassle of filling out all the relevant department of education paperwork. No family has chosen to do this since 1991, when the home school statute was enacted. One brave family finally decided to exercise this option, in order to blaze a trail for others. The New Hampshire Department of Education has now officially recognized the “Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy” as an official private school which is approved for attendance purposes.
It took a lot of trailblazing to get the academy approved. At one point, the department tried to make the family bring their home into compliance with all the fire, health, and safety regulations which apply to institutional schools. After the family demonstrated that their home met all residential fire and safety codes, the department eventually dropped this demand.
Now that this academy is a recognized private school, it can supervise home schooling families who are still operating under the home school statute. This is a step forward for freedom in New Hampshire.
