Bill Seeks to Clarify Reporting Requirements
State law presently requires persons conducting “private schools, and all private educational associations, corporations or institutions,” to report to the Delaware Department of Education their enrollment, age of pupils, and attendance information by July 31 of each year. Additionally, the same people must submit an annual statement of enrollment as of the last school day in September. Senate Bill 35 introduced by Senator Liane Sorenson would add language to existing law to clarify that home schools and home school associations are also subject to these reporting requirements.
Current state law recognizes home schooling as an educational option by either of two methods: (1) home schooling in affiliation with a home school association or organization registered with the department of education or (2) home schooling under the auspices of the local school district superintendent. Only the former method requires reporting of enrollment, age of pupils, and attendance information to the department of education. Senator Sorenson’s bill would not change this requirement but would clarify the legislative intent.
