Social Security Numbers Not Required
More and more school districts around the nation are using social security numbers for student ID numbers in their computer systems, and New Mexico is no exception. However, most home schoolers resist having to provide information that is not directly required by statute.
A Home School Legal Defense Association family received a phone call from the Buena Vista school district in early October. The caller indicated that she was checking to see if the family was still home schooling. This seemed an unusual inquiry, since the family had submitted their notification on time. The caller then requested the children’s social security numbers, which the family declined to provide.
While there may be a requirement in state law that mandates school districts to collect certain information such as social security numbers, there is nothing in the law that requires any family to be compelled to provide this information over their objection. The general applicable federal law is that social security numbers cannot be required by government agencies, including state and local, for anything other than driver’s license ID purposes.

Come to the Convention
HSLDA attorney J. Michael Smith will be a keynote speaker at the Christian Association of Parent Educators of New Mexico Annual Convention on April 22–23, 1999. HSLDA has found that personal contact and open communication are vital ingredients to building a strong state home school coalition. We encourage all our member families to attend this state conference and meet Mike Smith in person.

New Mexico
In the Four Corners region, where four states touch (New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado), visitors often sprawl out so they can say they have slept in all four at once.
