Commissioner Posts Private School Data
A number of Maine home school families have opted to band together to create their own private schools. This allows them to operate under the guidelines for non-approved private schools rather than the more onerous rules that apply to individual home school families. These schools must “file” annually with the state to assure continuing recognition by the state department of education that they are providing education equivalent to that in public schools. Although this filing is technically voluntary, it is the only procedure that the state has published for obtaining the necessary recognition.
Despite previous requests not to do so, the Maine Commissioner of Education once again published on the Internet the names of those private schools and their administrators. Home School Legal Defense Association attorney Scott Woodruff has drafted a new form for school administrators to use if they wish, stating emphatically that the information being filed must be kept confidential. It is our hope that the commissioner will honor the request for confidentiality contained in this new form. If not, firmer measures may need to be taken.
