Verifying Registration
When a Crawford County attorney sent a letter to a home school family asking for evidence that they were complying with the compulsory attendance law, the family asked their curriculum provider to reply on their behalf. The letter the curriculum provider sent did not address the issue of whether the family school was registered with the Kansas Department of Education as required by state law. Therefore, the county attorney concluded that the family’s school was not registered, and filed a petition against the family seeking to declare the children “in need of services” on the ground that they were not being educated as required by law.
In truth, the family school was properly registered, and Home School Legal Defense Association believes the family will win this case. Nonetheless, the reason this family has been forced into a legal battle is that the letter sent to the county attorney was not legally persuasive. If you receive any correspondence from a county attorney or school official, please contact HSLDA immediately and let our office respond on your behalf to help avoid unnecessary litigation. When you register your school, be sure to record its name so that prompt verification can be obtained through the Kansas Department of Education if needed later.

After the widespread slaughter of American buffalo, the scattered bones became so valuable that they were collected by the tons, and Dodge City bankers and businesses accepted them as legal tender.
