Home School Parents Fight Off Grandparent Visitation
Most home schoolers have one or more “in-law” stories to tell. It is seldom easy for grandparents to watch their children pull their grandchildren out of the public schools to embark on something as “radical” as home education. But most families don’t have to go to court to keep the in-laws at bay.
One Iowa family, however, was recently dragged into court proceedings in Polk County by an irate mother-in-law. At an initial court hearing, the judge ordered the mom and dad to attend a divorce class entitled “Children in the Middle.” They paid the fees and attended the class under protest, rather than risk contempt proceedings. They were the only married couple there.
Home School Legal Defense Association referred them to Ray Sullins, a very competent Iowa attorney, and worked with Mr. Sullins and the family as the case proceeded. When it became obvious that the family was prepared to defend their parental rights all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court, the mother-in-law apparently realized she had bitten off more than she could chew. On the very day the case was scheduled to come to trial, her attorney first postponed, and then dismissed the case. Please pray for this family and other home schooling families who are facing similar attacks.
