Fending Off Harassment
Virginia has 123 separate school jurisdictions, and Home School Legal Defense Association has over 3,000 member families in the Old Dominion. Put those two facts together, and you get dozens and dozens of legal conflicts. Some school districts, such as Fairfax, Prince William, and Frederick Counties, have more than maintained their reputation for being hostile and aggressive toward home schoolers in general. Others, such as Rapahannock, Luray, and Page Counties, have had much less experience with home schoolers and are causing difficulties out of pure ignorance. A well-intentioned but ignorant school official can be a very serious problem. However, most of these contacts are resolved when HSLDA educates these school officials on what the law really says.
There are some interesting developments on the horizon for Virginia home schoolers, however. The legislature is preparing to consider both a religious liberty bill and a tuition tax credit bill. The latter would allow home schoolers to keep some of their hard-earned tax money. HSLDA will keep our members posted on these legislative developments.
