Educational Tax Credits on the Horizon
Last year, the state legislature considered Senate Bill 470, intended to provide tax credits for parents who send their children to private schools. Many home schoolers had serious reservations about this bill, especially because it initially linked such credits to the ISTEP tests. Advocates of school choice are now working together to come up with a better option to ensure real choice for all children. At this point, it seems very likely that a well-designed bill will be submitted to the Indiana legislature in the spring of 1999.
Home School Legal Defense Association strongly encourages every member family to develop solid relationships with their elected representatives, both in the state house and senate. Taking the time to identify your state representatives, to determine whether they support or oppose school choice initiatives, and to get to know them makes a tremendous difference during the legislative season, when bills are moving so quickly that legislators hardly have time to think. Home schoolers who invite their elected representatives to speak at local support group functions or other home school events build important personal relationships that make a difference.
