DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

School Officials Perplexed

District of Columbia school board officials agree on one thing: they think D.C.'s homeschoolers need more regulation. According to the D.C. regulations, the only things a private instructor (which includes homeschoolers) needs to do is to report the name, address, sex, and date of birth of each minor who switches from one school to another. School board officials keep trying to insist that parents must also fill out a complex, multi-page "approval" form, which most homeschoolers simply ignore.

Home School Legal Defense Association attorney Scott Somerville is working with school officials in the District to minimize the damage this kind of governmental confusion might inflict upon families. Since most home school matters are referred to a single office, HSLDA has been able to resolve all problems to date by simply maintaining a working relationship with school officials. HSLDA encourages all D.C. members to call our office any time they are contacted by public schools.
