Congress Reintroduces Religious Freedom Legislation
On June 27, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1991, H.R.2797 was reintroduced in the United States Congress by Representative Stephen Solarz [D-NY] and a number of co-sponsors. The RFRA restores the time-honored test protecting the free exercise of religion which was eradicated by the United States Supreme Court in a surprise 1990 decision.
The RFRA was delayed in its introduction due to wrangling over the pro-life issue. A full history of the RFRA, including details of the pro-life controversy, are set forth in this issue (see page 3). Michael Farris has also written an editorial on the subject which appears on page 4.
H.R.2797 needs and deserves your support. Please write to your Congressman and Senators, urging their support and co-sponsorship of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
