The Curriculum Relief Fund

“My husband had been out of work and I am disabled,” Dawn wrote. “I homeschooled on a shoestring budget last year, and it was my first year attempting to homeschool. This year we couldn’t have even done that.”

Dawn is one of the many homeschooling parents who came to the Home School Foundation for help in 2010, and we were glad to be able to provide her with a grant from the Curriculum Relief Fund.

The Curriculum Relief Fund helps homeschooling families who are struggling to make ends meet by removing from their shoulders some of the pressure of purchasing curriculum. It is meant to be used for basic, essential curriculum, and scholarships are given based on financial need and the availability of funds.

As times got harder last year, the Foundation received an increasing number of requests from families who did not fit the criteria for any of our other funds but were still seriously struggling to afford to give their children a quality education. So HSF created the Curriculum Relief Fund to reach more families. The fund has already gone through some ups and downs, with the number of requests sometimes outpacing donations. But as God provides the funds, we turn around and give help to families in need.

“Thank you for the donation for our daughter’s curriculum and supplies for this homeschool year,” Dawn said. “Without it, we do not know what we would have done. We could not have provided her needs without this grant. Your organization is truly a blessing. When we get back on our feet, we would love to help another family in need.”

Isn’t it fun to receive an unexpected gift? At HSF, through the generosity of so many families, we are able to be a part of God’s behind-the-scenes work to give the unexpected. Listen in on this mother’s reflections:

Wow! Wow! I don’t know what to say! We just received a check in the mail from an application we sent in last fall. We can’t believe it! I was not expecting this at all! I know you told us you would keep our application on file—you had run out of funds—but this was a huge surprise!

Of course, God is never surprised. Behind the fabric of our lives, He is weaving the timing, the gift, and the details together to build our faith and draw our hearts to Him. The mother continues:

We are so thankful! God knew our need and filled it! You see, our local homeschool book fair is coming in two weeks, and we were thinking of not going because we didn’t have the money to get what we need and to look at other things we wanted more information about. Just the thought of what we need, not only for our two high school daughters but also for our four other children, was overwhelming! This is such a blessing. I can’t express it in words. We have been blessed! Thank you again!
