Forms not Mandatory

The Chicago Public Schools website recently contained information saying that homeschoolers must submit three forms annually. The first was the “Statement of Assurance” form, and the other two were called “Illinois State Board of Education Data Analysis and Progress Reporting.”

Home School Legal Defense Association Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff wrote a letter to the city school district explaining that none of these forms is mandatory under law. In fact, if a district staff member had actually read the second form, he or she might have noticed that it contained the statement, “Registration is voluntary in Illinois.”

Responding to Woodruff’s letter, the Chicago Public Schools attorney wrote that the school system would correct the website to make it clear that the forms are not mandatory.
