Medical Benefits Restored

A Home School Legal Defense Association member family in Missouri received a letter from their insurance company saying that their daughter would be dropped from their medical coverage if they did not confirm that the girl was continuing in school. The mother responded that the daughter was enrolled in a homeschool program. The insurance company said that this was not sufficient because the program was not an “accredited school.”

The family contacted HSLDA for help. HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff wrote a letter to the insurance company explaining that the daughter was in a lawful program of secondary education.

The company soon replied, restoring the medical benefits without penalty, but asking that in the future, the family provide a notarized statement twice a year confirming that the child is being homeschooled.
