Newspaper Corrects “Homeschool Tax Credit” Blooper

On December 29, 2009, the Le Mars Daily Sentinel ran an article titled “Senator fears program, tax credit cuts loom to balance budget.” The article discussed tax credits that might be eliminated to help the state budget and included the statement: “For example, teachers and parents who homeschool children receive tax credits.”

If this were true, it might have been a nice Christmas present. But alas, there is no such tax credit in Iowa. And eliminating a non-existent tax credit probably won’t help balance Iowa’s budget.

Home School Legal Defense Association Senior Counsel Scott Woodruff faxed a letter to the editor pointing out the error and the likely source of confusion—a private school tax credit in Iowa Code § 422.12.2 that has nothing to do with homeschooling.

The Daily Sentinel promptly called back. They then removed the error in the online version of the article and replaced it with the correct information about the private school tax credit Woodruff had provided.
