Fill out the Form or be Considered Truant!

Recently, the Kent Intermediate School District (ISD) informed several local Home School Legal Defense Association member families that they must fill out the enclosed “Declaration of Home Schooling” form to avoid “the possibility of [their] child being considered truant from school.”

Knowing that Michigan law does not require any notification or registration by homeschoolers at any time during the school year, these member families promptly contacted HSLDA for assistance.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Christopher Klicka sent letters to the Kent ISD on behalf of these member families, explaining why they are not legally required to fill out the form. Kent has not required anything from these families since.

Any members contacted by the Kent ISD should contact HSLDA immediately.
