District Cancels Meeting after HSLDA Contact

When the Heulett family (name changed to protect privacy) decided to homeschool their special needs son, they informed the elementary school’s special education coordinator that they would no longer need services from the public school.

However, the special education department continued to contact the Heuletts about their son’s individualized education plan (IEP) and even set up a meeting for the parents to attend. Unable to convince the school to cancel the meeting, Mrs. Heulett contacted Home School Legal Defense Association for help.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Christopher Klicka wrote a letter to the special education coordinator explaining that the parents had withdrawn their son from public school and were privately providing for all of his needs.

The Heulett family has not been contacted by the school since the letter was sent.
