School District Seeks Work Samples from Homeschoolers
Home School Legal Defense Association recently assisted a member family who had been requested to submit samples of their children’s schoolwork to the local school district for examination. Under the option for homeschooling chosen by the parents, they were required to submit attendance records and proof of vaccinations to the local superintendent, but they were not required to submit any of their children’s work samples for review. They contacted HSLDA and requested that we intervene on their behalf with the Hamilton County Department of Education in Chattanooga.
HSLDA Senior Counsel Dewitt Black sent a letter to the school official who had contacted our member family and informed her that state law does not require parents conducting homeschools to submit samples of their children’s schoolwork to public school officials for review. Consequently,
the school district has made no further attempts to compel the unauthorized submission of schoolwork samples.
Other HSLDA member families being requested to submit documentation or follow procedures not authorized by state law should contact us for assistance.
