In 2004, Mike Farris and the HSLDA Board of Directors realized the pressing need to inspire young people to make a difference in politics and to learn about our nation’s Christian founding in order to be effective leaders of tomorrow. Generation Joshua was founded that year as a division of HSLDA and began active outreach to parents and their teens.
Since 2004, Generation Joshua students have campaigned for countless pro-family, pro-homeschooling candidates, under the supervision of experienced GenJ staff and volunteers. They have formed over 75 GenJ clubs. Generation Joshua now offers over 10 online courses about government, America’s Founders, civic involvement, and more. These courses, free to GenJ members, can be used by homeschooling parents to satisfy civics, history, and government course credits.
And, by making two significant changes, GenJ is able to offer additional opportunities for young people:
First, the Benjamin Rush Awards program will be revamped to encourage more students to participate. With this program, GenJ members receive points for activities such as campaign work, voter registration drives, writing letters to elected officials, and completing GenJ online courses. The students with the most points are eligible for prizes including scholarships to Patrick Henry College or, starting this year, any college of the student’s choice. GenJ will be adding more levels of participation and a greater number of prizes so that more members have an incentive to participate. Check out the details at the GenJ website by clicking on the Education tab at the top of the page.
Second, the HSLDA board has approved the expansion of Generation Joshua to include college students. This will allow high school graduates to remain members of GenJ while they attend college. Resources for college students will include easily accessible information about our Founding Fathers from a Christian perspective, opportunities for involvement in political campaigns, lobbying work alongside Generation Joshua staff, internship placement, and more. Look for updated information in the coming months.
Generation Joshua membership continues to grow and is currently at its highest level ever. The GenJ staff salutes these members for their involvement and hard work in the cause of liberty. Edmund Burke, a great Irish philosopher of the 18th century, said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Today, Generation Joshua students are actively working to protect and uphold the values that Christians hold dear.
