The Blessing of Giving and of Receiving

The Home School Foundation experienced tremendous blessing this past year as we were entrusted with more than ever before, despite a shaky economy. As we move forward into the new year, reaching as many needy families as we can, it is often the very people we are helping who encourage us most.

Around Christmas, we sent a special gift to the homeschooling widows and single parents we helped over the past year. We received letter upon letter in response, describing how God brought the gift at just the right moment.

One widow wrote:

You have made an incredible difference in our lives as a result of the compassion of hardworking families who, like us, trust in the goodness of the Lord to meet their needs.

This is our second Christmas without our father and husband, and, in some ways, his absence is more pronounced than last year when everything was still a blur. Our seven children, ages 4-16 at the time of his death in a work accident, have been so touched by realizing that people they do not know sacrificed to make this gift possible for us. And the most wonderful thing is that it has made them more aware of the biblical commandment to “withhold not good” when it is within their power to do so for someone else. The kindness and generosity of other homeschoolers has taught us a valuable lesson in how to look for those around us who are in need and find ways to minister to them, even as we have been ministered to ourselves.

Our hearts have been humbled and blessed with the awareness that we serve a God that is too kind to be cruel and too wise to ever, ever err. It is in His mercy we find hope.

From the Director

Chuck Hurst
“For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more” (Luke 12:48).

At HSF, we are often humbled when the people to whom we give, such as the widow quoted on this page, also demonstrate this principle. Her words penetrate to the heart when she writes, “The kindness and generosity of other homeschoolers has taught us a valuable lesson in how to look for those around us who are in need and find ways to minister to them, even as we have been ministered to ourselves.”

It is a joy to work with both those who give to us and those to whom we give, who understand Jesus’ commandment to love as He has loved. Thank you for your support and encouragement as we continue pursuing this mission within the homeschool community.
