School District Says Parent Must be a State-Certified Teacher

When a parent in Dyersburg decided to homeschool her children for the 2008–2009 school year, the school district’s director of accountability erroneously advised the mother that she had to be a state-certified teacher in order to do so. The public school official threatened truancy charges against the parent unless her children were enrolled immediately in public school. Home School Legal Defense Association Senior Counsel Dewitt Black came to the aid of this family by sending a letter to the school official, informing him that none of the options for conducting home instruction in Tennessee required the parent to be a state-certified teacher. After receiving Black’s letter, the enlightened school official made no further threats against the family.
