Superintendent Oversteps the Law

When a Home School Legal Defense Association member family began their homeschool program in January 2008, the assistant regional superintendent of schools made such detailed demands that the family was flabbergasted. The official told the family that they needed to provide 1) proof that instruction commensurate with the public school was being provided, 2) documentation of subjects taught, 3) an annual calendar and daily schedule, and 4) proof that their children’s level of academic achievement was comparable to that of their peers.

After being notified of the situation, HSLDA Senior Counsel Christopher Klicka immediately sent the assistant superintendent an outline of Illinois homeschool law showing that his requirements went over and above its provisions. Klicka’s letter assured the superintendent that the family was following the state’s homeschool law, but that they declined to furnish the specific and abundant documentation demanded.

Please remember that if you live in Illinois, no documentation of your homeschool program, or even state notification, is required.
