School District Demands to See Curriculum

When a Home School Legal Defense Association member family in Fruitvale withdrew their children from public school in order to homeschool, they informed the public school of their decision out of courtesy.* However, the school informed them by letter that they were “required to provide to Fruitvale ISD written proof of what [they] are teaching and the curriculum that [they] are using.”

Concerned, the family asked HSLDA for guidance. Senior Counsel Christopher Klicka responded to the school’s letter with a letter of his own, stating that the school’s request was illegal and that homeschool programs operate as legal private schools under Texas law. He indicated that the family was operating their private school according to the requirements set forth in the law and that the Fruitvale ISD should not have any concerns about the family’s private school.

If your school district makes similar demands of your homeschool program, please contact HSLDA.
