School district drops "letter of intent"

On September 29, 2006, a representative of the Clifton Public Schools sent a letter to a homeschooling family, saying, “If you wish to continue to home school for the 2006-2007 school year, please forward a written letter of intent to my attention by October 10.” The Velazquez family promptly forwarded the letter to Home School Legal Defense Association.

HSLDA Attorney Scott Woodruff wrote and then called the school official, explaining that a “letter of intent” is not required under New Jersey law. The official quickly acknowledged this to be correct and assured us he would not request a letter of intent again or imply that it is a requirement in order to homeschool lawfully.

Our thanks go to this vigilant HSLDA member family, whose quick response will help protect homeschool freedom throughout New Jersey.
