State braces for legislation
Wyoming’s legislature meets for a very short time each year, but when it does, the pace becomes fast and furious. Wyoming homeschoolers have worked hard over the last three years to protect family freedoms during the legislative session, and this year should be no exception.
Homeschool leaders and other activists are already bracing for efforts to expand Wyoming’s compulsory attendance age. Home School Legal Defense Association strongly supports a parent’s right to decide when a child enters school, and opposes efforts to force children into the public schools at ever younger ages. Likewise, HSLDA opposes efforts to drive the compulsory attendance age up, forcing teenagers to stay in school long after they would prefer to be elsewhere. Keeping unwilling teenagers in school increases costs and disrupts the education of those children who want to be there. Building “alternative schools” for kids who want to drop out fails to address the real problems that make young people want to leave public schools.
HSLDA will be working closely with Wyoming homeschoolers to protect family freedoms as the legislature meets. Be prepared to call your representative or senator!
