Member family accused of truancy

On September 27, 2005, a representative from the Will County Regional Office of Education contacted a Home School Legal Defense Association member family regarding their daughter’s absence from school. Although the family had recently withdrawn their daughter from public school to homeschool her, the official accused them of truancy. The family notified HSLDA right away.

HSLDA Litigation Attorney Darren Jones sent a letter to the state official, verifying that the family was operating a bona fide homeschool according to Illinois law and specifying that any further contact with the family should occur through him.

The letter quickly resolved the matter—the family has heard nothing further from the regional office of education.
