School nurse retracts demand

Members of Home School Legal Defense Association—a longtime homeschooling family—were recently told by the local school district nurse that they needed to give her a doctor’s statement confirming they were in compliance with immunization requirements. This surprised them because they had submitted immunization information for all their children previously. They called HSLDA for help.

We called the school nurse and explained to her that families are only required to submit immunization information (which could include an exemption from immunizations) the very first time they file a Competent Private Instruction (CPI) form for each individual child. We reminded her that the first CPI form for each child had been filed by this family several years ago.

The nurse acknowledged we were correct. She quickly conceded that she had no authority to require additional immunization information, and she withdrew her demand.
