Family questioned about special needs

A Home School Legal Defense Association member family in Yavapai County was recently visited by the county superintendent, who had received a report that their child had special needs.

After getting over the initial shock of the superintendent’s sudden appearance, the member calmly asked a few questions to learn the nature of the visit. Apparently, a neighbor had called the superintendent, concerned that the child was not in public school and believing that the parents could not adequately educate a child with special needs.

Under Arizona law, there is no prohibition against a parent teaching a child with special needs at home. In fact, parents are often

in the best place to provide just the right education for these children. Many resources are available for homeschooling a special needs child; as a starting place, visit HSLDA’s special needs webpage at www.hslda.org/hs/specialneeds.

Our member declined the county superintendent’s offer of services and assured him that the child’s needs were being adequately met at home. HSLDA does not expect any further difficulties from Yavapai County.
