Calhoun threatens "monitoring"

A Home School Legal Defense Association member family in the Calhoun Intermediate School District received a letter that included a "Home School Report Form" and a memorandum indicating the need to verify the courses being provided to their children.* An ominous parenthetical sentence warned that the parents' answers "could be subject to monitoring."

Because such verification does not need to be supplied to the school district under Michigan law, HSLDA promptly wrote to the Calhoun ISD. We reminded Calhoun, "The burden to prove the family is not home educating is carried by the school district. The homeschooling families are presumed to be fulfilling this law unless you have probable cause or credible evidence that they are not."

In addition, we informed the district that there was no need for a family operating under the homeschool statute to file a "report form" with their local school district, and that our member family would not be doing so.
