COLORADO

District creates "mandatory" form

A member family alerted Home School Legal Defense Association to a "Home School Notification" form being sent out by the Logan County School District this year.* Not only does the form require families to list their child's grade, the school he would otherwise be attending, the name of his instruction program, and whether he will be participating in district classes or activities, but it also states, "This form needs to be completed each school year."

Colorado statutes require parents to "certify, in writing, only a statement containing the name, age, place of residence, and number of hours of attendance of each child enrolled in said program" (emphasis added). Logan County homeschoolers are not required to fill out or return any particular form, nor are they required to provide any information beyond the names, ages, place of residence, and hours of attendance of their homeschooled children.

HSLDA sent a letter to the Logan County School District's administrative office explaining the discrepancies in the form and requesting that a copy of the revised form be sent to our office for review.

If you have received this form, please discard it immediately and contact HSLDA.
