Providence drops registration demand
In early August 2004, several families notified Home School Legal Defense Association that the Providence School District had asked them to register their children with the local school system.
HSLDA Attorney Scott Woodruff responded with a letter to the Providence Director of Counseling and Social Services explaining that homeschoolers are not required to register with public schools. Ten days later, the director wrote to an HSLDA member family that she would not submit the family's notice of intent for the school board's approval until the child was registered in the Providence public schools.
In a firmly worded letter, Woodruff warned the director that the policy would not be tolerated. The director called Woodruff on September 21 and said that the school system would no longer require homeschool children to be registered. Homeschoolers have had numerous disputes with the Providence school system over the last several years regarding forced registration; we hope this is the last one.
