NEW YORK

Above and beyond the law

Already this school year, several Home School Legal Defense Association members have received letters containing unauthorized demands from their local school districts. Families in Islip and North Syracuse were informed that before they could teach their children at home, they would need to fill out a "new entrant" form and register with the school district.* A family in the Shenedehowa Central School District was instructed to provide proof of residency (in the form of a deed, lease, or utility bill) and proof of their child's age (birth certificate or passport). On behalf of our member families, HSLDA Attorney Thomas Schmidt notified each school district that state law does not require homeschooling families to register with the public school or provide proof of residency or age.

If your school district attempts to demand that you register your homeschool or provide more documentation than is required, please contact HSLDA. With each member family we defend and each school district we inform of the law, we can set another precedent that helps preserve the liberty of all homeschooling families.
