WASHINGTON

Year-end assessments

Under § 28A.200.010 of the Revised Code of Washington, every school-age child is required to be annually assessed. The assessment consists of either a standardized achievement test approved by the state board of education or a written assessment of the student's academic progress.

While the written assessment must be done by a certificated person who is currently working in the field of education, the standardized achievement test only needs to be administered by a "qualified" individual. A person is deemed qualified if he meets the eligibility requirements for administering standardized achievement tests.

When selecting a standardized achievement test, you may choose from a list prepared by the Washington State Board of Education, or any standardized achievement test that has been evaluated by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements. The list compiled by the state board of education contains tests such as the fifth edition of the California Achievement Test, the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the Stanford Achievement Test, and the TerraNova. The SAT and PSAT tests also satisfy the year-end assessment requirement in Washington.

Should you have any questions about whether a particular test may be used or who is qualified to administer the test, please contact Home School Legal Defense Association.
