Homeschoolers hold the line

Many states have reacted to the sex abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic Church with legislation that severely restricts constitutional rights, but Ohio homeschoolers are holding the line for liberty. When Senate Bill 100 was introduced, requiring every pastor and priest to report any suspicions of child abuse, many church leaders were afraid to oppose it. The Ohio Council of Churches tried to make the best of a bad situation by asking for some amendments, but dared not point out the obvious: this bill would turn pastors and priests into state agents.

Fortunately, homeschoolers were willing to rise to the challenge. Although the bill is still very much alive and could be voted on at any time, homeschoolers and freedom-loving Ohio schools have protested any legislation that would make priests and pastors into spies. Thanks to your calls, a majority of members on the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee are opposed to SB 100. Although homeschoolers only make up two to four percent of Ohio's population, even a tiny minority of active citizens can make a real difference in our democracy.

Ohio homeschoolers have been so active in defending their liberties that Home School Legal Defense Association is forming a special chapter of Generation Joshua just for Ohio families.
