IOWA

District mistakenly requires report cards

In the Burlington Community School District, Secretary to the Superintendent LeeAnn Springstein told a homeschooling family that because they were not using certified curriculum, they must send quarterly grades (through the third quarter) to the school district, and year-end grades to the state.

Home School Legal Defense Association contacted Ms. Springstein and explained that her demand for report cards was unauthorized. Furthermore, Iowa law does not require homeschool families to use a "certified curriculum."

Ms. Springstein acknowledged her mistake. She was very apologetic, admitting that she had not researched the law and had simply assumed report cards were required. She assured us it would not happen again.

We appreciate Ms. Springstein's rectification of the matter.
