Burdensome portfolio review cancelled

During the four-and-a-half years they served as missionaries in Honduras, the Santangelo family homeschooled their children. In early 2004, they returned to the United States and settled in Cape Coral, submitting a notification of intent to homeschool as required by law.

Shortly thereafter, the Santangelos received a letter from the Lee County Public Schools homeschool evaluator requesting to see the family's portfolio, citing a policy of requiring portfolio reviews for all homeschools that begin midyear. Concerned about trying to fulfill this request amid the stress of moving back to the U.S., the Santangelos called Home School Legal Defense Association for assistance.

HSLDA contacted the homeschool evaluator and explained that the family was willing to cooperate, but that the portfolio review was a heavy burden on their homeschool. Moving from any location is very difficult, but moving from out of the country is even more so. The Santangelos were still in transition and homeschooling at the same time. Additionally, homeschoolers in Honduras are not required to maintain portfolios, so the family would only have about a month's worth of schoolwork in their portfolio. HSLDA requested that the portfolio review be cancelled.

Lee County agreed not to require a portfolio review and the Santangelos were able to focus their energy and attention on homeschooling, rather than complying with burdensome policies.
