MISSOURI

District sends "homeschool application"

Kathleen Nepple, superintendent of the Shawnee R-III School District, sent a letter to all area homeschooling families requesting them to fill out a form entitled "Home Schooling Application." The form asked for the homeschooled students' names and ages, the address of the homeschool, and the parent's signature, implying that families were required to return the form. In fact, Missouri homeschooling families are not required to fill out or return any form.

Home School Legal Defense Association staff contacted Superintendent Nepple to explain the problem. She was very apologetic and agreed that her letter and form may have been inappropriate. She immediately drafted a letter to the families explaining that they were not required to fill out or return the form.

If your school district has sent you a similar form, discard it. Missouri law does not require you to fill it out or send it back.
