Council Bluffs corrects error
Ronald J. Diimig, supervisor of student services of the Council Bluffs Community School District, sent a letter to all local homeschooling families requesting immunization records and birth certificates for each homeschooled child. He said state law required the district to keep these records on file.
This is incorrect. Iowa law requires that evidence of immunization be submitted only the first year a child is homeschooled. Iowa law does not require the district to obtain or keep on file homeschooled students' birth certificates.
Home School Legal Defense Association staff informed Mr. Diimig of the error and cautioned that if he did not rectify it, we would consider further action. Mr. Diimig wrote again to the same homeschooling families, explaining his mistake and apologizing for any confusion or inconvenience he may have caused.
