When recent homeschool graduate Danielle Jones (named changed) moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, with her husband, she looked forward to taking some community college courses. Unfortunately, Coconino Community College refused to accept her homeschool diploma. She contacted Home School Legal Defense Association, and we promptly informed Coconino officials that the United States Department of Education has recently clarified that homeschoolers may "self-certify" their diplomas. There is no need for an accredited diploma or a GED.

Coconino accepted Jones, but still refused to give her federal financial aid. Undaunted, Mrs. Jones decided to exert her First Amendment right to "petition the Government for a redress of grievances." With HSLDA's help, she will lobby for real change in her community. We encourage interested Arizona homeschoolers to lend their support by writing letters asking the college to change its homeschool policy. Letters should be directed to Coconino Community College, Office of Student Financial Assistance, 2800 S. Lone Tree Road, Flagstaff, AZ 86001.
